Crime and punishment in Cork

Ovens.

Srelane, Ovens is on the main N22 Cork - Macroom road. A well-known bar/restaurant is on the corner of the turn off for the Lee Valley golf club. In 1792 Daniel Murphy murdered Denis Sullivan (Kilcrea) at Srelane Cross. At this time, those sentenced to death for murder were taken to the place of the crime and executed. 
The ‘Cork Hibernian’ reported that the body would then be dissected, according to Act of Parliament.

Macroom.

Codrum is situated at the western end of the town. On the April 19th, 1799  group of men broke in and killed Robert Hutchinson Esq. with a pike through his chest.
John Duggan (alias Captain Thunderbolt) Owen Scanlan, Callaghan McCarthy, and 2 others were taken by an escort of yeoman cavalry from Cork to Macroom, where they suffered death and decapitation for the murder of Mr. Hutchinson.
*The men were 'United Irishmen' and were believed to be from Aghabullogue, Co. Cork.

Rathcormac Co. Cork CofI cemetery

The cemetery is situated in the centre of the village. There is much history attached to Rathcormac. 

There is a plaque on the entrance to the cemetery remembering John Dahill who was hung at Curraglass 1798. John Dahill being a United Irishman. I have attached a Dahill headstone from the 1700's ....a descendant of the family (from the USA) has been added.

Another historical event was the 'Rathcormac Massacre'. Linkhere  

Collon RC Parish Records 1819-1917

The Parish of Collon Co. Louth is situated between Drogheda and Ardee.

Cloyne Co.Cork

Cloyne is  south of the town of Midleton and approximately 30kms from Cork City. The parish is steeped in history and is well worth a visit. The Round Tower is well over a 1,000 years old and the Cathedral is directly opposite.
One of the headstones I have added is that of the Moreen/Moureen family. Looking at the plaque, there was a Richard Moreen executed in 1798, probably a family member.

Ballinaltig Cemetery - Watergrasshill Co Cork

This Cemetery has headstones going back to 1763 at least. Many are easily legible and some in the finest condition I have seen in many years.

Surnames include Mulcahy Moore Daly Murphy Power O'Grady McCarthy and many more.

Good Shepherd Convent Sundays Well, Cork

The Good Shepherd, Magdalen Asylum was an orphanage and Magdalen Laundry from 1872 - 1970's.

This post is a brief record of some of the children and women who resided there. I first became interested in the Convent after seeing the burial place of a number of these women and children at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Cork.

Lismore Co. Waterford.

Lismore is a town full of history. Situated on the River Blackwater and only 65kms from Waterford City and 60kms from Cork City.

For the researcher, you can visit Lismore Castle, St. Carthage's Cathedral, various graveyards, and various parishes nearby. Lismore Workhouse 1838 - 1923 isn't accessible though it's worth stopping if passing by.

St. Finbarr's Cemetery, Cork.

St. Finbarr's Cemetery is situated on the Glasheen Road, Cork.

I have collected a large amount of photographs from St. Finbarr's. I add to the collection every couple of months.

The following photographs are from the Republican Plot. The plot is situated to the right as you enter the cemetery. Memorials are included, some members recorded are buried at their local graveyard.

One of the most well-known headstones is that of Tom Barry, Commandant of the 'West Cork Flying Column' Irish Republican Army.

Templebreedy, Crosshaven, Co Cork - Graveyard.

Crosshaven is only a few kms. from Carrigaline. Templebreedy is situated above the town with a lovely view of Roche's Point and the entrance to Cork harbour. 

Headstones can be dated back to the 1700's.

If anyone is interested in a possible ancestor buried at the graveyard, please email me anytime.

This stone is known as 'The Darney Stone' from 1711. The name is more commonly known today as 'Dorney'.

This headstone reads - William Murphy died Nov. 1822 aged 57 years. Dan' Mahony died June 1846 aged 22 years. 

This headstone is easily read.

Carrigaline Co. Cork Graveyard

St. Mary's Church of Ireland, Carrigaline, Co. Cork is approximately 15kms south-east of Cork City.

Some headstones date back to the early 1700's. Many are legible, with others too weathered to give full information. I have two examples of the headstones below. I visit the area from time to time. Please email  if you require any further information.

Cork to Mississippi

I was recently asked if I could research the Irish side of a family from Mississippi. 

I had the following information to go by. 

Michael O'Leary born c1882 from Co.Cork, Ireland. Luckily enough, I had a townland to go by. O'Leary is a very common surname in Cork. I was sure I could obtain a record, proving it was  Michael was another thing. 

After a few weeks, I was able to obtain a baptismal cert.for 'our' Michael. I had no parents to go by, and I certainly wasn't going to put my name to a 'might be.'

In the margin of the baptismal register, there was more information.

More information is added if a 'letter of freedom' was sought.

My Latin isn't perfect. The writing was difficult to read also. I have added what was transcribed from the original register -

*I was well pleased with discovering this record, also the extra information of Michael's parents.

Researching your Ancestry and 2016

Researchers visiting Ireland in 2016 are coming at a very special time.

Ireland is celebrating the centenary of the Easter Rising of 1916. This is a huge date for the people of Ireland and will be marked throughout the country.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will be adding  information and advice daily. Where to research, places of interest to visit, accommodation and where to socialise also. I will cover most counties. You can also email directly.

I can also recommend that from St. Patrick's Day - March 17th, a new movie is being released in Ireland & the USA. The film is centred on The Rising of 1916. An excellent cast and a must for all those with Irish connections.

Any researchers or visitors visiting Co. Cork, I strongly recommend a visit to Cork City Gaol. The museum is a 20-minute walk from the main thoroughfare in Cork City. The gaol has a long history which you can read at the link given. Out of personal interest, my children's great-grandfather was imprisoned there 1922-23. He was an anti-treaty supporter.
